Digital Support for Participative Pedagogical Work Processes in Institutions for the Education, Upbringing and Care of Children and Young People

Initial situation

The aim of child and youth welfare facilities is to generate optimal developmental conditions and opportunities so that children and adolescents are given the best chances for the start of their adult life by the educators, pedagogues and therapists in the period of life that is so important for their personality development. This great responsibility lies in the hands of the educational professionals of an assistance facility who, on the one hand, have to accompany, organise and document the educational/therapeutic work with the children and adolescents in care for various care and education partners, which requires a basic pedagogical attitude and is implemented through the development of often facility-specific documentation systems.
In order to be able to meet the high documentation requirements in the future, the use of modern information collection and processing is indispensable. Against the background of a steady increase in cases with complex multi-problem situations in recent years and the resulting higher demands on the quality of care, it is necessary to support the professionals at the pedagogical and work organisation level. In recent years, increased demands on employees in socio-educational institutions have led to increased stress, which in turn has led to early departures from the profession, increased sick leave and fluctuation.

Aim of the research project

The project aims to develop methods for dealing with pedagogical challenges and optimising work processes in child and youth welfare facilities and day care centres. In particular, methods will be developed to analyse and document the connections between socio-cultural influences and biographical development in the individual life worlds of children and young people, as well as to investigate their influences on the interactions of all actors involved. The IT-based methods enable the educational professionals to have an individual view of the children's lives. With the help of the prototypically developed software, opportunities and challenges in pedagogical situations and processes can finally be mapped, development potentials can be recognised and individual help plans can be created.

Social added value

In addition to the project partners of the aid institutions, the developed tools are to be made accessible to a broad target group. For this purpose, a broad network of interested institutions is already available during the project period, which will be expanded to include trade union networks. In order to also ensure the technical utilisation through a functional, robust and data protection-compliant IT-based implementation of the support tools developed as a model in the project, a cooperation agreement for long-term development and maintenance was concluded with IT service providers who have the necessary competences for these requirements. The research results achieved are further used by the participating research partners in current projects and are directly incorporated into current courses in the area of academic training and further education, especially for the imparting of competences in the area of pedagogy and social work.
