Innovative Networks - Digitally Optimising Interfaces
Companies from different trades are usually involved in a construction project. In their cooperation, efficient and systematic information management is indispensable for the smooth and successful course of the project. Individual customer wishes, legal requirements and cross-trade work pose challenges for cooperation, as does analogue communication, where information often gets lost. At the same time, the expertise of project staff must be continuously expanded, transferred into practice and passed on within the project- and company-related network.
Aim of the research project
The main objective of the IN-DIG-O research project is to develop two digital tools to optimise collaboration and networked learning in the construction industry. The first digital tool is a mobile application for planning and execution management that aims to optimise information management in collaboration. This digital tool combines 3D modelling of buildings with a clear input screen. This enables project staff without knowledge of 3D design to pass on information efficiently and without errors. The second digital tool aims to support learning and knowledge transfer. The digital tool bundles formal and informal learning processes as well as internal and external learning locations for the employees. This is intended to encourage a deepening and dissemination of knowledge acquired, for example, in manufacturer training and work-integrated contexts. Scientific case studies on work and learning processes will be carried out to support the development, testing and implementation of the two digital tools in company practice. Furthermore, consultations and training courses on the use of the digital tools will be designed and carried out. The establishment of a network of companies in the construction industry helps with the implementation, exchange of experience and dissemination of the digital tools. The digitalisation of the world of work is also advancing in the construction industry and can lead to innovative ways of designing work and learning processes. Information and communication technologies promise fast and reliable networking of all project partners both within the company and strategically across company boundaries. Furthermore, technical solutions, such as the 3D modelling of buildings, offer new possibilities to facilitate cross-trade cooperation and to initiate new learning processes in the network. However, there is often still a lack of suitable skills among employees to exploit the potential. Coordinated advisory and training concepts are therefore needed to embed new digital technologies meaningfully in work and learning processes.
Social added value
In IN-DIG-O, lighthouse projects are created for competence development in intra- and inter-company networks. Concrete, practicable digital tools for information, cooperation and knowledge management are being created that promise greater efficiency in the companies' working and learning processes. Cooperation and coordination processes on construction sites used by different trades will be simplified and optimised by the tool for planning and execution management. This can reduce the stress and strain experienced by project staff, make the planning and execution of construction projects more time-efficient and stimulate interdisciplinary learning. The digital tool for learning and knowledge transfer promises an increase in learning success for individual employees and the entire company as well as an increase in the transfer of knowledge into everyday working life through the networking of knowledge. Business models for the commercial exploitation of both digital tools are being developed in order to make them accessible to a larger circle of users. The tool for learning and knowledge transfer also has connectivity in other research and development projects on the design of learning transfer and is to be disseminated in research and application in other SMEs, also outside the construction industry. The scientific and practical findings from the IN-DIG-O project are disseminated in subject-specific, interdisciplinary and practical communities. For example, the results will be presented at scientific conferences and published in professional journals. The findings are shared in existing networks and professional associations, in the context of information events at craft enterprises and in state and national committees of the craft sector. The resulting advisory and training concepts will be integrated into existing qualification measures.
